SEAWEED BENEFITS

THE SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS OF SEAWEED
Our Seaweed grows along rocky shorelines around the Galician Coast, where the Atlantic Ocean merges with the Cantabrian Sea. The cold and wild nutrient-rich waters, along with protected estuaries, create the perfect conditions for our edible Sea Vegetables to thrive.
Seaweed is a versatile new superfood. It can be used in many recipes, including classic sushi rolls, soups, stews, and salads. Complementing any dish, or even as a signature garnish, to supplement smoothies and cocktails.
Of the three main groups of Seaweed (brown, red and green), each has a unique set of nutritional values.
Here are just some of the scientifically-backed benefits:
1. BROWN SEAWEED CAN ENHANCE THYROID FUNCTION
It is well known that the average Western diet is low in Iodine, the main element that is needed for healthy thyroid function.
Our Atlantic edible Seaweeds contain a concentrated source of iodine and an amino acid called tyrosine, both of which our thyroid needs to function properly.
Our Brown Seaweed varieties are especially good in supplying Iodine and Tyrosine. These include:
Please read our labels for the Australian recommended daily Intake (RDI) of iodine. If you have an overactive thyroid, please consult your doctor to find out what your iodine consumption should be.
2. GOOD SOURCE OF MINERALS AND VITAMINS
Our range of Atlantic seaweeds is a strong source of vital minerals including iodine, iron along with folate, zinc, sodium, calcium and magnesium. Each Seaweed variety has a superpower in terms of nutrients. We find in Sea Lettuce, more iron, by weight than the lentils or the spinach. We recommend combining Sea Lettuce, lentils and Spinach to make an actual super-iron salad. This is a great way, particularly for Vegans, to get a great iron boost and feel stronger than Popeye!
Here is a summary of which seaweed varieties provide the best mineral content:
Calcium: Green Seaweeds (Sea Lettuce and Codium) and Red Seaweeds (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita).
Iron: Green Seaweeds (Sea Lettuce and Codium) and Red Seaweeds (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita).
Magnesium: Green Seaweeds (Sea Lettuce and Codium), Brown Seaweeds (Wakame and Sea Spaghetti) and Red Seaweeds (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita).
Iodine: Brown Seaweeds (Kombu, Wakame and Sea Spaghetti), Green Seaweeds (Sea Lettuce and Codium) and Red Seaweeds (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita).
Potassium: Brown Seaweeds (Kombu, Wakame and Sea Spaghetti) and Red Seaweeds (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita).
Manganese: Red Seaweeds (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita).
Copper: Green Seaweeds (Sea lettuce and Codium).
Get your Vitamin B12 from SEAWEED!
The edible Seaweed is also an excellent source of vitamins.
Amazingly, if you are looking for the vegan alternative for Vitamin B12 (which is normally sourced from red meat), look no further!
In only 2g of our Atlantic Dried Sea Lettuce (RDI for Iodine), there may be as much as 1.2 μg of vitamin B12, 50% of the Recommended Daily Intake ( RDI).
20g of rehydrated or Fresh Sea Lettuce may provide the same Vitamin B12 content.
Atlantic Sea Moss is also a B12 hero! 0.5 g of Dried Sea Moss or 10g of re-hydrated or Fresh Sea Moss provides the RDI for Iodine.
This amount of dried or re-hydrated Sea Moss provides 0.4 μg of B12 or 16% of the RDI.
Note: that these quantities are based on the RDI of Iodine in Australia. (See: nrv.gov.au/nutrients/iodine). The Upper Level of Intake (UL) of Iodine in Australia is 1.1 μg per day. This is just over 7 times the RDI level.
3. HIGH ANTIOXIDANTS MAY HELP PREVENT CANCER
Our Atlantic Seaweeds contain a wide range of antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C and E, carotenoids and flavonoids.
Antioxidants protect the body from cell damage by binding to free-radicals which are known to cause cancers, particularly cancers of the colon and breast, and leukemia.
The fucoidan found in Brown Seaweed (Atlantic Kombu, Atlantic Wakame and Sea Spaghetti) is just one example; this compound may help boosts the immune system and has demonstrated anti-viral properties.
Explore and enjoy our Green Seaweeds types to increase your antioxidant intake:
4. SUPPORT DIGESTIVE & GUT HEALTH
Edible Sea Vegetables may aid in stimulating the release of digestive enzymes that enable the absorption of nutrients and facilitate the metabolism of fats.
They also contain fucoidans that may act as a prebiotic or non-digestible fibre that gut bacteria feed on enhancing both the composition and activity of microflora in the stomach.
Try our Atlantic Kombu cooked to make an ‘unami’ stock in a soup or with lentils to improve their digestion. Explore adding in your salads with our Green Seaweed types (Sea Lettuce and Codium) or make a smoothie with the gel of any of our Red Seaweed varieties:
5. MAY PROMOTE WEIGHT LOSS
There are two major pathways in which our Atlantic edible Seaweed may help lose weight.
1. Fucoxanthin, which is a pigment found in brown seaweed (Atlantic Kombu, Atlantic Wakame and Sea Spaghetti), facilitates fat burning and contributes to an increased metabolism may help in preventing the accumulation of fat cells.
2. Alginate, a form of fibre found in Atlantic Seaweed, is very effective at absorbing fat during food intake and preventing entry into the bloodstream. This fibre also allows the stomach to empty more slowly, enabling you to feel fuller for longer and delay hunger.
6. MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF HEART DISEASE
Currently, heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia.
Sulphated polysaccharides (sPS) found in edible seaweed may help reduce and then maintaining lower levels of triglycerides and LDL known as the “bad” cholesterol in the body.
This support may be found particularly in the Atlantic Kombu the three varieties of Red Seaweed (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita) delivered by Oceanic Cuisine to the Australian tables.
7. MAY IMPROVE BLOOD SUGAR AND REDUCE DIABETES
Fucoxanthin an anti-oxidant, along with alginate and other compounds present in the Atlantic edible Seaweeds may help stabilise blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
Brown Seaweeds (Atlantic Wakame, Sea Spaghetti and Atlantic Kombu) get their colour from Fucoxanthin, and may assist in stabilising blood sugar levels by reducing insulin resistance.
The particular type of dietary fibre contained in Green Sea Vegetables types (Sea Lettuce and Codium) may also slow down the rate at which carbohydrates (sugars) are absorbed and therefore reduce sugar absorption into the blood.
8. BEAUTY INSIDE OUT!
The abundance of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids and anti-oxidants in our Atlantic edible Seaweed helps keep skin revitalized, moisturized, and counter aspects of aging.
By our range of Atlantic Red Seaweed (Sea Moss, Algatinado and Multipartita) you can taste this benefit enjoying signature and delicious smoothies just adding in your drink the gel made after cooking for 10 minutes any of our red sea vegetables types.
Try with some Green Seaweed (Sea Lettuce and Codium) wraps to cleanse skin directly by expelling toxins, the anti-inflammatory properties of the Sea Vegetables are useful as soothing or for treating wounds.
